The Romanesque House was built in the last quarter of the 12th century as a typical public building with the ridge of its roof parallel to its façade. The main buildings of castles and palaces were also built in this way. And that includes the imperial palace in Gelnhausen. The house was used as an administrative building and town hall until well into the 16th century. However, when the market hall on the Upper Market Place was redesigned as the town hall, the Romanesque House was sold and was hidden by a half-timbered construction in front. In this way the Romanesque façade was protected. After the half-timbered structure was demolished in the late 19th century, the house revealed itself very much as it had looked 800 years before.
